Accessibility Statement

Our commitment: EqualityIQ is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We continually improve the user experience for everyone and apply relevant accessibility standards.

1. Our commitment

EqualityIQ is software built specifically to help UK local authorities meet their obligations under the Public Sector Equality Duty. We believe it is essential that our own website and application are accessible to all users, including those with disabilities.

We are committed to making this website accessible in accordance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA.

This accessibility statement applies to the EqualityIQ marketing website at equalityiq.co.uk and the EqualityIQ application at app.equalityiq.co.uk.

2. Conformance status

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. There are three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA.

This website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Partially conformant means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard.

What we have done

  • Added skip navigation links on all pages so keyboard users can bypass the navigation menu
  • All pages use appropriate HTML landmark regions (<nav>, <main>, <footer>)
  • Interactive components (navigation menu, FAQ accordion, billing toggle) use ARIA attributes to communicate state to assistive technologies
  • The navigation hamburger menu can be closed with the Escape key, which returns focus to the trigger button
  • All form fields have visible labels, error messages announced as live regions, and aria-invalid state management
  • Visible focus indicators are shown for all interactive elements when using a keyboard
  • Text colour combinations meet the WCAG AA minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1
  • Decorative emoji and icon elements are hidden from assistive technologies using aria-hidden="true"
  • Images include descriptive alternative text
  • The website respects the prefers-reduced-motion media query
  • Pages have meaningful, unique <title> elements and descriptive headings
  • The website is navigable by keyboard alone

3. Technical specifications

This website relies on the following technologies for conformance with WCAG 2.1:

  • HTML5
  • CSS3
  • JavaScript (ECMAScript 2015+)
  • WAI-ARIA 1.1

The website has been tested with the following browsers and assistive technologies:

  • Google Chrome with ChromeVox
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Safari on macOS with VoiceOver
  • Keyboard-only navigation (Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space, Escape, Arrow keys)

4. Known limitations

Despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility, there may be some limitations. Below is a description of known limitations and potential workarounds:

Marketing website

  • Some complex data visualisations and mock UI screenshots may not have full text alternatives. We are working to improve these.
  • Third-party embedded content (such as fonts loaded from Google Fonts) is not within our direct control.

Application

  • The EqualityIQ application is actively developed. We are working to bring all application screens to WCAG 2.1 AA conformance.
  • Some older browsers may not fully support all ARIA patterns used.

5. Accessibility features

Keyboard navigation

All functionality is available via keyboard. Use Tab and Shift+Tab to navigate between interactive elements. Use Enter or Space to activate buttons and links. Press Escape to close open menus and return focus to the trigger element.

Screen readers

All pages include a skip link as the first focusable element, allowing screen reader users to skip repetitive navigation and jump directly to the main content. Interactive components announce their state (expanded/collapsed, checked/unchecked) to screen readers.

Text sizing

Text can be resized up to 200% without loss of content or functionality. The website uses relative units (rem, em) for font sizes throughout.

Colour and contrast

We have ensured that text and interactive elements meet the WCAG AA minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Colour is not used as the sole means of conveying information.

Reduced motion

All CSS transitions and animations are disabled when the user has set their operating system preference to reduce motion (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce).

7. Enforcement procedure

If you are not satisfied with our response to your accessibility feedback, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS):

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the 'accessibility regulations'). If you are not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).
